Toy Trouble is a 1941 Merrie Melodies short directed by Chuck Jones.

Plot[]

Sniffles and Bookworm pay a late-night visit to a toy store, the 15th floor of Lacy's, and turn on all the toys. A wind-up toy duck chases Sniffles up and down the toy store. Then a cat comes after them. Sniffles hides out among a group of Porky Pig dolls. Soon as the cat goes after the two characters, the wind-up toy duck from earlier chases the cat away.

Censorship[]

  • On Cartoon Network and Boomerang USA, all scenes involving the black toy music band (including the part where Bookworm accidentally turns it on and Sniffles turning it off and telling the Bookworm not to touch anything else) are cut.[6][7][8][9] These scenes are however left uncut on other international Cartoon Network and Boomerang feeds outside the United States, including on the Latin American channel Tooncast.[10]

Notes[]

  • This cartoon was also the first to carry the 1941-45 opening theme and the 1941-55 closing theme for the Merrie Melodies series. The opening theme would come to be associated with the a.a.p. package in general, as many color cartoons in that package would be reissued as Blue Ribbons, opening with that version of the theme. That theme would even be played on the a.a.p. logo itself.
  • In the Blue Ribbon reissue print, when the WB shield stops coming in, it shows a smaller version of the 1943-1947 WB shield instead of the 1947-1953 WB one. This variant is also used in the Blue Ribbon version of "Fagin's Freshman".
  • Porky Pig makes a cameo appearance as numerous dolls at the toy store.
  • The sound effect of the wind-up toy duck from this cartoon would later be re-used in cartoon "Invasion of the Bunny Snatchers" when Bugs Bunny directs the pale stereotype version of Daffy Duck into the sack of "pale stereotypes" to be blasted into space with the aid of a wind-up key.
  • As late as 2008, a 35mm print of this cartoon with its original titles was known to exist.[11]
  • Vitaphone release number: 9949[12]
